“Centaure”
Twins Jan and Joël Martel were influential artists of the Art Deco and Cubism movements, evidenced here in this mascot of a centaur holding a toy car. The Martel brothers shared a studio and used the same signature. They belonged to groups of fine and decorative artists who strove to break free of tradition.
The Columbia Three-Track Tricycle cost $160 in 1883 and was the first to offer a “differential drive” gear that permitted both wheels to be driven equally and for ease of rounding corners. The picture of the Three-Track Tricycle is taken at Lodge corner Oulton Park Cheshire England. The white building on the right is the Lodge.
