“Hibou” (“Owl”)

Sandoz was a Swiss artist who came to Paris to study sculpture. He was one of the foremost Animaliers, artists interested in depicting animals. In 1933 he founded the Société Française des Animaliers. While much Animalier work is naturalistic, here we can see the clear influence of Art Deco. The piece also bears the mark of Susse Frères, a famous foundry and editor in Paris.
